The COMMITTEE FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF DISCRETE AND COMBINATORIAL MATHEMATICS (CADCOM), a committee of the INSTITUTE FOR COMBINATORICS AND ITS APPLICATIONS (ICA), solicits two page descriptions of applications of discrete mathematics. Applications to any area are welcome; examples are
The snapshots will be made available widely through this site of the WWW. In addition, from the snapshots submitted, we plan to select a collection of 100 to form a pamphlet for promotional purposes. The collection is intended to be used widely to advertise discrete mathematics to a variety of audiences: university administrators, government agencies, research funding agencies, politicians, industrial collaborators and managers, and academic colleagues.
We are inviting you to participate in three ways:
You can see what we have in mind by looking at the snapshots already displayed at this site of the WWW. They show the format to be followed; some flexibility is permissible. The application should be reasonably specific, and contain some mathematical content. Keep in mind at all times that members of the target audience, while likely to be technically inclined, may not be mathematicians!
The collection should be of great value in fostering a better appreciation and recognition of discrete mathematics and combinatorics. Writing two pages about a significant application of discrete mathematics with which you are familiar shouldn't take too long, but the combined efforts of many will, we expect, lead to an impressive collection.
Please contact Professor C.A. Rodger rodgec1@mail.auburn.edu with comments, questions, or contributions. A skeleton latex file with the appropriate format for a snapshot can be obtained by clicking here . You may want to check with me by email before writing your application to make sure that it does not overlap too much with existing snapshots.
