The Auburn University REU in Discrete Mathematics and
Algebra welcomes applications for the Summer of 2011.
Sponsored by the National Science Foundation
Dates of program: June 5 - July 29, 2011
Applications completed by February 1, 2011 will receive priority consideration
After two weeks of intensive introduction to a selection of open
problems and problem areas, participants will break into groups working on
problems in different areas (although anyone may work on anything, and it may
well happen that a participant will belong to two or more of the specializing
groups). Participants will be asked to make short presentations, in daily
seminars and problem sessions, of background literature and of progress made,
or of obstacles encountered. At the end of the program each group will be asked
to prepare a written summary and an oral presentation of the summer's
endeavors. Participants are asked and will be encouraged to maintain contact
with the project directors for program evaluation, for further research, and
concerning publication of publishable results.
Some Discrete Mathematics problems will require the use of Computer Algebra. For work in Computer Algebra, participants will be trained in MAGMA. It is preferable, but not required, that participants have some background in Abstract Algebra.
Sample Problems and Problem Areas
Participants will receive a stipend of $3,600 and will live
on campus with housing paid. Travel and food are left to the participants'
devices.
Participation is restricted to US citizens and permanent
residents. Also, you must be an undergraduate, meaning that you are pursuing a
bachelor's or associate degree that will not be awarded before August, 2011.
Have college transcripts and at least two letters of
recommendation sent to
Professor Peter Johnson
Department of Mathematics and Statistics

Fax: 334-844-6555
Unofficial transcripts are acceptable, and signed letters of recommendation sent by fax to Professor Johnson are also acceptable.
Also, please write a letter addressed to Professor Johnson, describing your own mathematical background and interests: what you liked in high school or in college, what you didn't like, and/or what you have wondered about. You may include speculation on your career goals, if any.
Applications completed by February 1, 2011 will receive priority consideration. We hope to fill positions by the end of March, 2011.
Direct inquiries should be sent via email to Professor Johnson at johnspd@auburn.edu or to Professor Overtoun Jenda at jendaov@auburn.edu
Non-Auburn residents will be housed on campus for free, in
an REU enclave. Auburn residents, including (rarely) out-of-towners who secured
a domicile for summer in Auburn, will see their stipend augmented by a housing
allowance.
We recommend that participants from long distance arrive via Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. There is a limousine/bus service, Express 85, that will take you from the airport to Auburn University. Arrangements will be made so that you are met and situated.
